Built Together: The Story Behind The Bourland Real Estate Team

The Bourland Real Estate Team · August 26, 2026 · 5 min read

For Joe and Courtney Bourland, real estate has never simply been about selling houses. It has been about building something meaningful—a business, a family, a community, and eventually an organization where other people could build something meaningful of their own.

Their story began long before The Bourland Real Estate Team.

Joe and Courtney knew each other through their families growing up, but their relationship took a much more serious turn as teenagers. What followed was a whirlwind romance, marriage, and ultimately a move west to Arizona, where they would build their life and raise their family.

They arrived with ambition, a willingness to work, and very few connections.

What they did have was a shared belief that if they continued learning, served people well, and did the right thing even when no one was watching, they could build something that lasted.

Learning the Business From the Ground Up

Courtney grew up around real estate and earned her real estate license early in life. She also spent time working in title, giving her a broader understanding of what happens behind the scenes of a transaction.

Joe entered real estate with a different motivation. He wanted to create a business that could provide greater opportunities for their growing family.

Together, they became students of the industry.

They learned sales. Marketing. Negotiation. Contracts. Investing. Leadership. Operations. And perhaps most importantly, they learned how deeply personal a real estate transaction can be for the people they serve.

Early in their careers, they adopted a simple philosophy:

Do the right thing.

It became the foundation for how they treated clients, made decisions, built relationships, and eventually led their team.

The results followed. Within their early years in the business, the Bourlands were already closing more than 100 homes annually. Over time, their organization grew into one of the top-performing real estate teams in the country.

But production was never the entire goal.

They built the, 'Kind of Team They Would Want to Join!'

As the company grew, Joe and Courtney became increasingly intentional about the type of organization they wanted to create.

Courtney became the operational force behind the company, developing systems and processes that allow agents and staff to operate at a high level. Joe gravitated toward sales, coaching, leadership, and developing agents.

Their personalities complement one another.

Courtney brings relentless drive, structure, and accountability. Joe brings energy, coaching, relationships, and a people-first leadership style.

Together, they have worked to create an environment where agents are challenged to grow—but never expected to grow alone.

The philosophy is simple: give people the tools, training, systems, accountability, and support to become the best version of themselves.

Joe regularly coaches agents around goal setting, personal responsibility, skill development, and consistent improvement. The expectation is not perfection. The expectation is ownership.

Agents are encouraged to take responsibility for their careers, push beyond what is comfortable, and continually improve their skills. Because the goal isn't simply to help someone close their next transaction.

The goal is to help them build a sustainable career.

People Over Profit

Over the years, the Bourlands' business philosophy has continued to evolve, but one principle has become increasingly clear:

People over profit.

It means clients are more important than commissions.

It means agents are people before they are production numbers.

It means leadership is about serving, not simply managing.

And it means success carries a responsibility to give back.

The Bourlands have supported a number of community organizations and charitable causes throughout the years. Their annual coat drive has provided hundreds of coats to local children in need, and supporting families facing difficult circumstances has become especially meaningful to them.

That commitment is personal.

When their son Jackson underwent multiple heart surgeries, their family experienced firsthand the importance of organizations like Ronald McDonald House Charities and the people who step forward to support families during difficult seasons.

Experiences like those helped shape the way Joe and Courtney view leadership and success.

Business matters.

But people matter more.

Family Is the Foundation

Behind the business has always been the Bourland family.

Joe and Courtney raised two sons while simultaneously building their company, and many of the same principles they teach inside their organization were first practiced at home: hard work, accountability, goal setting, perseverance, gratitude, and showing up for the people around you.

Family remains central to the way they lead.

They believe professional success should create a better life—not replace one.

That philosophy is also reflected in the culture they are building for their agents. Real estate can be demanding, unpredictable, and competitive. The Bourlands believe the right organization should help agents navigate those challenges while creating opportunities for personal growth, financial stability, and a life they are proud of outside of work.

Win the Day

Joe and Courtney often return to a quote that has shaped how they think about life:

“You have two lives, and you start the second when you realize you only have one.”

For them, it is a reminder to live intentionally.

To take the opportunity.

To have the conversation.

To make the call.

To invest in the relationship.

To serve when there is nothing immediately in return.

And to never assume there will always be another day to build the life you want.

That mindset has carried them through more than two decades in real estate.

Today, The Bourland Real Estate Team is consistently recognized among the top real estate professionals in the country. But Joe and Courtney will tell you that rankings and production are simply byproducts of something much more important.

Build good people.

Serve clients well.

Keep learning.

Hold yourself accountable.

Do the right thing.

And create something that lasts.

That was the foundation when they started.

It remains the foundation today.

And it is the kind of organization they intend to continue building for the people who choose to build alongside them.
